Come and hear about Nikki Ray's cycling adventure and get inspired to do your own!
In the summer of 2018 Nikki started building her purple steel framed bike out of mostly recycled parts (she later named the bike Frida). She set off on her journey towards Ghana in August 2018 getting a ferry to Santander in Spain and starting her cycling from there. Of course there were highs and lows, emotionally and geographically.
In Senegal she collided with a taxi damaging her knee which put her out of the saddle for a month. The roads were often unpaved and Nikki hadn't brought a ruddy cassette removal tool with her, which became a running annoyance every time she needed to remove the cassette when a spoke broke. But she also met the most wonderful and generous people along the way, saw millions of stars and so many tropical birds. And now and again she mixed it up, like jumping on to the longest train in the world (with her bike), an open top iron ore train in Mauritania; and braving many a river and delta in wooden pirogue boats of different sizes, bike and luggage in tow.
In the end over the Atlas mountains, through the Sahara desert and in 40 degree tropical heats she made it to Ghana, cycling 10,000km across 13 countries: Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.
